In the world of scents, perfume is an art form that transcends time and space, leaving a lingering trail of memories and impressions. Finding a perfect fragrance is a personal journey, and while beauty is often said to be in the eye of the beholder, the realm of perfumery is no exception. Let's explore and find out what a good and bad perfume is, and make a fragrance truly captivating or cringe-worthy.
Balance
It is all about harmony and balance of the notes. Is there one note that takes over all composition or does every note have its equal role? I think perfume is like a classic music composition. Every 'instrument' (note) should have its right time and place and should not take over another one.
Development
How does the composition change over time? Does it evolve or stay linear? Some perfumes are created to be linear and do not change over time, but then it should be done on purpose.
Structure
Are there any 'holes' in the development of the composition? Are the notes clear and steady? If you have a perfume with many volatile molecules (e.g. citrus), you need to balance it more with large molecules (e.g. patchouli, musk).
Originality
Are you smelling something unique and special or does it come across as a 'dupe' for the fragrance that has been already launched? Does it surprise you? Does it make you feel special? Having said that, the perfume still needs to be pleasant for the nose no matter how original it is.
Power & Radiance
Does perfume leave a distinctive trail (sillage), or can people smell you when you come close to them (projection)? Nowadays, many people care less about the strength of perfume, but in my opinion, why wear perfume if no one can smell it (even you)?
Longevity
How long does the perfume last on your skin depending on its category (body mist, aftershave, Eau de toilette, Eau de Parfum, Parfum)? Personally, I prefer longevity versus power/radiance. However, if I love the scent, I do not care for longevity. One of my favorite perfumers Jeane-Claude Ellena creates perfumes that are very subtle, and beautiful, but they do not last long and I do not care.
